Shizo Kanakuri, Japan’s First Marathon Champion

金栗四三 日本の初めのマラソン勝者

Have you heard of Shizo Kanakuri? He was a runner in 1912 Olympics in Stockholm. Back then, Japan wasn’t well known and everyone was surprised when he broke the world record by 27 minutes during the time trials!

When the day of the official Olympic race came, Shizo did is best but fell down halfway through the event. I kind family nursed him back to health, but he was so ashamed of losing that he left before telling race officials! 55 years later, he came back to Sweden and finished the race!
