4-3-2 Technique

Use this technique to improve your fluency, just a few days a week!

Step 1:  Choose a Topic

This can be any topic that you want, it doesn’t matter which one you choose.  You will be able to improve your English speaking skills in just 10 minutes, 3 times a week.
For this example, we chose an IELTS Task 2 Speaking Example “Describe a teacher you didn’t like at school.”

Step 2:  Brainstorm and Make Notes

  • It is IMPORTANT not to write full sentences.  Make sure you simply make some notes about what you are going to talk about.
  • 4 minutes is a long time, so make sure you take a little time with this step at first.  After several attempts at this technique, step 2 will go much faster.  Your goal is to be able to take “mental notes” before moving on to Step 3.

Step 3: Speak for 4 Minutes

  1. Set a timer for 4 minutes.
  2. Speak for 4 minutes, without stopping.
  3. Use a mirror, selfie camera, webcam, or a speaking partner (if you can find one!)
  4. If you get stuck, it’s okay, just keep speaking.

Step 4: Speak for 3 Minutes

  • This is the same as step 3.  You want to try to say everything you said in step 3, but try to squeeze it all into 3 minutes.

Step 5: Speak for 2 Minutes

  • Just like steps 3 and 4, you will simply need to speak about the same topic for 2 minutes.
  • By this step, you should notice that your brain is processing the words and information faster, allowing you to say what first took you 4 minutes, but in as little as 2 minutes!!!

Step 6: Repeat

As you can see, this technique takes about 10 minutes to complete.  If you continue to do this, you will see drastic improvements in your fluency and your ability to speak faster, think more clearly, and improve your spoken English skills.  This is your path to becoming a fluent English speaker.
What topic did you choose?
Do you have any techniques similar to this one?
